Migration and Regional Identity: The Case of Ukrainian Students in the Region of South Bohemia

This master thesis on migration and regional identity focuses on the case of Ukrainian student migration in the region of South Bohemia in Czech Republic. It is an exploratory qualitative research. The research question of this study is: How do Ukrainian students perceive the regional identity of South Bohemia and how do they integrate in that region? The objectives behind that question were to see if these migrants perceive a regional identity in that region, if they identify with it and the main challenges they face to integrate.

Ukrainian labour migration and remittances in the European Union

The remittances or money transfers sent by migrants to the country of origin are considered to be one of the welfare channels with potential to influence macroeconomics indicators. The aim of this thesis is to analyse migration and remittance behaviour of Ukrainian migrants in the context of the EU. Study is based on the questionnaire survey inspired by the similar projects in the Latin America and Mexico. Contribution of the thesis lies in the detailed analysis of the topic that separates different forms of remittances. The econometric model consists of statistical summary of the data and three hypotheses tests focusing on the probability and amount remitted; consumption behaviour and probability of getting skilled position. According to findings, probability and amount remitted is determined by demographic factors and direction of effects differs in the case of regularly and one- time payments. Altruism and business financing are primary motives to remit. Remittances appear to be transferred by informal channels into the productive forms of consumption. A procurement of skilled position is positively influenced by human capital factors but also reflects labour market situation in the destination country. Analysis of migration from Ukraine to the Czech Republic

Ukrainians are the largest minority in the Czech Republic and they form an important part of both Czech society and its economy nowadays. The bachelor thesis analyzes the causes of Ukrainian migration to the Czech Republic. Regression analysis was performed to obtain results. The work concludes that motivation of Ukrainian migration is the economic attractiveness of the Czech Republic. However, it is not possible to ignore the cultural, ethnic, historical and linguistic relationship of these two nations.
